Pneumoccocal and MMR vaccines

Say cheese!!

Like a puppy, with a toy in its mouth!!

Today maman took me to the surgery to get my two shots if vaccinations. Oh, what a nightmare!!!!

First of all, the doctor had a look at my ears and she gave me the shivers, and to top it all up, she gave one injection followed by another one. As soon as, I had the first injection, I was in pain and screaming with big tears. It did not get better, I was dreading the second injection but too late, it was already in. I was so upset, nothing could pacify me but it did not last long luckily.
Since I am a brave soldier, I stopped crying and put a courageous face on. Well done to me!!

The first injection I had was the
pneumococcal vaccine. It protects against meningitis C and Hib (pneumonia) as well as being one of the most common bacterial causes of ear infections.
The second injection was the MMR vaccine.
The MMR vaccine is an injection that prevents from catching the following three diseases.
  • Measles - this can cause ear infections, pneumonia, fits and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Sometimes it can be fatal.
  • Mumps - this can cause meningitis, which can result in deafness. It may cause inflammation of the pancreas, leading to pain, nausea and vomiting. In boys it can damage the testicles and cause infertility.
  • Rubella - this is also known as German measles and is usually a minor illness
When I got home that day, I was feeling very uneasy. In the evening after dinner, I had high temperature. Both my parents monitored me all night because of the high temperature. The next morning, I felt better and I was at normal temperature. But them after breakfast, I was hot again. I had a red and big swelling on one of the thighs (the MMR injection - it's one of the side effects).

Now I don't have to worry for a long time since the new injection won't be due till pre-school time - around 3-5 years of age. What a relief!!
